YANCOAL Austar 300 Mains Surge Bin misting chambers

Design and installation of surge bin enclosure upgrades and misting chambers, verified by benchmark and post-install efficiency respirable dust testing.

Near Cessnock, NSW (underground, 300 Mains panel surge bin)

Problem
  • Substantial dust cloud generated at the point where coal drops from the crusher to the underground bin, causing severe contamination and hazardous conditions.

  • Existing dust suppression system was not effective in mitigating the problem.

Solution
  • Enclosed the top of the surge bin and sizer using conveyor belt material to contain dust generated from the sizer.

  • Improved spray system on top of the sizer intake by installing an additional spray bar.

  • Installed two misting chambers to treat displaced air from surge bin filling using super-fine water mist.

  • Included water traps to reduce water carry-over and an air fan to ventilate the surge bin when idle to prevent methane accumulation.
